The Castro Theatre is a popular San Francisco movie palace which became San Francisco Historic Landmark #100 in September 1976. Located at 429 Castro Street, in the Castro district, it was built in 1922 with a Spanish Colonial Baroque façade that pays homage—in its great arched central window surmounted by a scrolling pediment framing a niche—to the recently rebuilt basilica of Mission Dolores nearby. Its designer, Timothy L. Pflueger, also designed Oakland’s Paramount Theater and other movie theaters in California in that period. The theater has over 1,400 seats (approx 800 downstairs and 600 in the balcony).  -wikipedia

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. -wikipedia

The Embarcadero (Spanish: Wharf), is the eastern waterfront and roadway of the Port of San Francisco, San Francisco, California, along San Francisco Bay, constructed atop an engineered seawall on reclaimed land. It derives its name from the Spanish verb embarcar, meaning “to embark”; embarcadero itself means “the place to embark”. The Central Embarcadero Piers Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 2002.

A large public sculpture, Cupid’s Span by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, was installed in 2002 along the Rincon Park area. Resembling Cupid’s bow and arrow with the arrow implanted in the ground, the artists stated that the statue was inspired by San Francisco’s reputation as the home port of Eros, hence the stereotypical bow and arrow of Cupid.

World Series Champions 2010, 2012, 2014?

The World Series is the annual championship series of North American-based Major League Baseball (MLB), played since 1903 between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion. Prior to 1969, the top-ranked team in each league automatically advanced to the World Series; since then each league has conducted a championship series (ALCS and NLCS) held shortly before the World Series to determine which teams will advance. 109 Series have been contested, with the AL winning 63 and the NL winning 46. The winner of the World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff and the winning team is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. As the series is played in October, which is one of the fall (autumn) months in North America, it is often referred to as the Fall Classic.  -Wikipedia

The San Francisco Giants are an American professional baseball franchise based in San Francisco, California. The Giants are a member of the National League West Division of Major League Baseball (MLB). Originally known as the New York Gothams, the team moved to San Francisco in 1958.

As one of the longest-established professional baseball teams, the franchise has won the most games of any team in the history of American baseball, and any North American professional sports team. The team was the first major league team based in New York City, most memorably playing at the legendary Polo Grounds. They have won 23 National League pennants and appeared in 20 World Series competitions – both records in the National League. The Giants’ 7 World Series Championships rank second in the National League (the St. Louis Cardinals have won 11) and fifth overall (behind the New York Yankees (27), St. Louis Cardinals (11), Oakland Athletics (9), and the Boston Red Sox (8)). The Giants have played in the World Series 20 times (14 times in New York, 6 times in San Francisco, the most recent being 2014), but boycotted the event in 1904.

The Giants have the most Hall of Fame players in all of professional baseball. The Giants’ rivalry with the Dodgers is one of the longest-standing and biggest rivalries in American baseball. The teams began their rivalry as the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers, respectively, before moving west for the 1958 season.

The Giants played at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, New York, until the close of the 1957 season, after which they moved west to California to become the San Francisco Giants. As the New York Giants, they won 14 pennants and 5 World Series championships behind managers such as John McGraw and Bill Terry and players like Christy Mathewson, Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott, Bobby Thomson, and Willie Mays. The Giants have won six pennants and two World Series championships since arriving in San Francisco.

Imagine celebrating the Holidays from the fantastic world of San Francisco on the Embarcadero just outside the Ferry Building that’s being taken over by a surreal family of eclectic circus animals and various assorted wildlife. Then imagine the nostalgic great Laffing Sal born from old fun houses throughout the USA and scattered throughout sunny California beach towns like Santa Cruz, Long Beach, and Santa Monica; and who can forget her raucous laughters echoing from San Francisco’s own Playland at the Beach, and now overshadowing Old St Nick’s Ho Ho Ho’s with her boisterous haunting laughters!? Then toss in Einstein, Einstein? Yes Einstein! Imagine all that while the Navy Blue Angels fly at the speed of sound high atop the San Francisco Bay as tourists from around the world watch in awe and disbelieve! You’re not in Kansas anymore! You’ve just entered the imaginative world of wingsdomain.com!

The San Francisco Ferry Building is a terminal for ferries that travel across the San Francisco Bay, a food hall, and also has offices, located on The Embarcadero in San Francisco, California. On top of the building is a 245-foot tall clock tower, with four clock dials, each 22 feet in diameter, which can be seen from Market Street, a main thoroughfare of the city.

The Blue Angels is the United States Navy s flight demonstration squadron. The Blue Angels team was formed in 1946,[1] making it the second oldest formal flying aerobatic team (under the same name) in the world, after the French Patrouille de France formed in 1931. The Blue Angels six demonstration pilots fly the F/A-18 Hornet, typically in more than 70 shows at 34 locations throughout the United States each year, where they still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in their aerial displays in 1946. An estimated 11 million spectators view the squadron during air shows each full year. The Blue Angels also visit more than 50,000 people in a standard show season (March through November) in schools and hospitals. Since 1946, the Blue Angels have flown for more than 260 million spectators.

Laffing Sal is one of several automated characters that were built primarily to attract carnival and amusement park patrons to funhouses and dark rides throughout the United States. Its movements were accompanied by a raucous laugh that sometimes frightened small children and annoyed adults.

San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) began in 1981 when then Mayor Diane Feinstein led the nation in celebrating America’s sea services.  Taking place every October on the Marina Green over Italian Heritage Weekend, SFFW’s air show, parade of ships and many community events have become a significant and integral part of the city’s local culture and economy.  As the largest and most significant event of its kind in the nation, SFFW features a unique training and education program that brings together civilian and military forces to develop and share best practices in humanitarian assistance and emergency disaster response.  Consistently attracting millions of visitors, creating important and lasting relationships for its partners, and generating over 10M in annual revenue for the city, SFFW is now recognized by the United States Department of Defense as the model for fleet weeks across the country.  San Francisco Fleet Week is an annual public event that honors the contributions of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces while advancing cooperation and knowledge among civilian- and military-based Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response personnel.  -fleetweeksf

One of the best places to view the Golden Gate Bridge is from the Sausalito side of the bridge atop “Battery Spencer”.  The views from this high perch is simply spectacular!  You are literally on top of the Golden Gate Bridge with a sweeping view of San Francisco in the background.  When I first discovered this place back in the late 80’s, I was awestruck by the shear magnificence of the bridge and how human ingenuity really have no bounds.  The traffic below looked like ants from this vantage point and I felt I was on top of the world.  You can say, it was love at first sight!  Looking through the bridge, I could clearly see the City with the Transamerica Tower and the Bank of America Building piercing through the Financial district.  But as much as I tried, I was still unable to see my eight story office building along Union Square, I guess an eight story building can be equated to a needle in a haystack!  Scanning from East to West, I can clearly make out the long stretch of green trees lining the historic Golden Gate Park and the Presidio until the spectacular sweeping view got to the end of the City where it sat at the Nudist Baker Beach.

Best time to visit this place is on a weekday as there are very few “legal” parking spaces and the roads are winding and narrow.  If you do decide to visit on a weekend, you should try to arrive early before 10:00am before the crowds arrive.  But even if you do come when it is crowded and even if parking is full, drive around a little and a parking space will surely open up, most visitors stay no more than 30 minutes at a time.  If you still can’t find a parking space, drive a little further along Conzelman Road, there are a number of smaller parking areas along that road with similar vistas through the Golden Gate Bridge.  And by all means, explore this magnificent treasure of the Bay Area, you will find history in the many Batteries scattered along this area as well as throughout all the San Francisco Bay Area hills.  Old Batteries are some of the best places to visit in the San Francisco Bay Area, not only do they have a rich San Francisco history, they also oftentimes are perched atop hills with spectacular views where they were once used to keep the “enemies” out, and now they are used to keep visitors coming in!

If you keep driving West along Conzelman Road, you will reach another popular look out area where there are equally spectacular views of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, albeit, from a little bit further distance.  But with that further distance, you will also get a wider angle view of the entire surrounding San Francisco Bay Area.  Nestled in these hills are another number of Batteries including Battery 129, a historic World War II military installation.  But Hawk Hill is better known for it’s diverse numbers of raptors that visit this area:

“It is the lookout point for the largest known flight of diurnal raptors in the Pacific states. Each autumn, from August into December, tens of thousands of hawks, kites, falcons, eagles, vultures, osprey, and harriers are funneled by the peninsular shape of Marin County into the headlands. Hawks avoid flight over water since warm thermals that provide lift are rare. Abundant populations of small mammals protected by the park are one resource that helps maintain the large number of visiting raptors in the Headlands during the fall, but the strong onshore winds hitting the hills of the Headlands provide cold updrafts and hot late summer days provide warm thermals that allow these birds to fly more efficiently.”  -Wikipedia

Hawk hill is not only a fabulous place to view the magnificence of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge as well as for viewing raptors in their natural habitat, not to mention the historic Batteries, but it also contains a number of easy to intermediate hiking trails that meander in and out of the Batteries and the surrounding hills.  If you go, pack a lunch and plenty of water, you can spend a whole day exploring this area, enjoy a wonderful picnic, marvel at the spectacular views, and get a good workout while you’re at it.

The San Francisco Bay Area has always held a certain place in my heart, it is a special place with a rich history and elegance that have been appreciated by all that have visited and an even more profound love for those who have either spent time here or for some lucky few who have had the pleasure of living here.  After growing up in Sacramento, I spent most of my adult life living in San Francisco, and even now, San Francisco is no further than a BART ride across the bay from where I currently make my residence in the East BayThe Beatles sang, “There are places that I remember…”, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of those special places.  In this series of blogs which I call “San Francisco Bay Area Through The Eyes of a Local Artist and Photographer”, I will take my audience through the fabulous streets of the San Francisco Bay Area as interpreted by myself, a long time San Francisco Bay Area local.
